Returning to the new normal

An Update from The Athletic Zone & CrossFit HPC about our response to the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The safety, health, and overall wellness of our members is our #1 priority. We are monitoring information from the Centers for Disease Control, the State Department, and the NC Department of Public Health.

The situation is evolving daily; however, from the information that we are privy to at this time, the overall risk for community transmission of COVID-19 in North Carolina is still moderately low. We will continue to follow the guidance of our local and national health experts as we make decisions for TAZ and CrossFit HPC.  

With that said, lower risk does imply some risk, and we all know the common cold and flu can invade the walls of the gym.  Please know that despite our best efforts your risk of exposure to COVID 19 increases when you come to the gym.  You must have a doctor’s note to attend training sessions at the gym right now.  See Dr. Vardy or Dr. Beck to see if you qualify for a prescription for exercises. All college athletes who are receiving financial scholarships are able to workout during open gym hours.  All children must be doing camps to participate in Gym activities.

f you are worried about getting or spreading COVID-19 and don’t want to risk exposure at the gym please stay home and know we provide zoom classes for functional fitness, CrossFit and Sports performance conditioning classes.  

We do ask that if you are experiencing respiratory symptoms (coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath) and/or a temperature above 100.4 F to please monitor your symptoms at home and consult your physician if your condition worsens. We recommend that you avoid coming back to the gym until you are completely symptom-free.


  • Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects after each use.

All gym equipment, as well as the floor space, should be wiped down after every use with the cleaning solution provided in the gym. Coaches and front desk staff have been asked to pay extra close attention to ensuring that all equipment is properly cleaned after each use. Additionally, we ask that if you are returning from (or in close contact with anyone returning from) international travel from areas of the world experiencing significant outbreaks of COVID-19 that you monitor yourself closely for any symptoms, consider taking time off from the gym until you are certain you are symptom-free, and act according to the guidelines provided by the government health officials. Again, this is an evolving situation, and we are trying to be proactive about keeping our community healthy with the best environment possible. We will continue to provide regular updates as we have more information to share.
